any substance that causes the formation by the body of ANTIBODIES to neutralize their effect. Antigens are often PROTEIN substances, regarded as 'foreign' and 'invading' by the body, and elicit the production of antibodies against them. See ALLERGEN ; ALLERGY ; ANAPHYLAXIS .
