Medical Term
antagonistic action
an action in which systems or processes act against each other so that the activity of one reduces that of the other. Two MUSCLES may operate in this way, the contraction of one necessitating the relaxation of the other, as in the movement of a limb (see also VOLUNTARY MUSCLE ). In addition, hormones and drugs act antagonistically, the release of one limiting the effect of the other.
