Medical Term

anoxia

the condition in which the body tissues do not receive sufficient oxygen. It may be caused by high altitudes (and thus lower atmospheric pressure), a lack of red blood cells, or a disease such as PNEUMONIA in which the amount of oxygen reaching the lung surfaces is limited and therefore that available for transfer to the blood is reduced.
