a balloon-like swelling in the wall of an artery that occurs when it becomes weakened or damaged in some way. There may be a congenital weakness in the muscular wall of the artery involved, as is often the case within the brain. Damage may also be the result of infection, particularly SYPHILIS , or degenerative conditions, e.g. ATHEROMA .
