amniotic fluid

the liquid in the AMNIOTIC CAVITY , which is clear and composed mainly of water containing foetal cells, lipids and urine from the FOETUS . At first it is produced by the AMNION , but its volume is supplemented by urine from the kidneys of the foetus. It is circulated by being swallowed by the foetus and excreted by the kidneys back into the cavity and has an important protective function. The amniotic fluid ('waters') is released when the membranes rupture during LABOUR .
