aminophylline

a drug that relaxes smooth muscle and stimulates respiration. It is widely used to dilate the air passages in the treatment of asthma and some cases of chronic bronchitis. Administered by mouth or injection, it may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fast heart rate. See also THEOPHYLLINE .
