Alphavirus is a group of ARBOVIRUSES transmitted mainly by MOSQUITOES, some of which can cause infectious diseases in humans and animals.
Alphavirus is a genus of RNA VIRUSES belonging to the family Togaviridae. Alphaviruses are a type of ARBOVIRUS and are commonly transmitted between hosts through MOSQUITO bites. Many alphaviruses naturally circulate between mosquitoes and animal reservoirs, but some can infect humans and cause disease. Human alphavirus infections may produce symptoms such as FEVER, RASH, joint pain, POLYARTHRITIS, or inflammation of the nervous system. Diseases caused by alphaviruses include ROSS RIVER FEVER and O'NYONG NYONG FEVER.
