alpha fetoprotein

a type of PROTEIN formed in the liver and gut of the FOETUS , detectable in the AMNIOTIC FLUID and maternal blood. It is normally present in small amounts, but when the foetus has a neural tube defect ( SPINA BIFIDA and ANENCEPHALY ) this level rises higher in the first six months of pregnancy.
